Biography

Bill Shapiro is the former Editor-in-Chief of LIFE magazine; LIFE’s relaunch in 2004 was the largest in Time Inc. history. Later, he served as the founding Editor-in-Chief of LIFE.com, which won the 2011 National Magazine Award for digital photography.
Bill is the author of several books, among them Gus & Me, the best-selling children’s book he co-wrote with legendary Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards.
In 2018, he published What We Keep, which was turned into a streaming series with Cynthia Erivo serving as executive producer.
He has written about photography for the New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, Esquire, Vogue, the Atlantic, Oprah, the Los Angeles Times, Texas Monthly, New Mexico magazine, among others.
A fine-art photography curator for galleries and a consultant to photographers, Bill is also a Contributing Editor to the Leica Conversations series.
Say Less, a photography book he edited and for which he wrote the text, won the 2024 Lucie Award for Best Photo Book.
Since 2025 — author of articles on photography in the Noga Creative Union.
