The Volga-Viatka earth

The name Vyatka first appears in the Russian annals of 1374, and then repeatedly occurs in the annals of the first half of the XV century. There are two versions of the origin of the name Vyatka. The first relates it to the Udmurt tribe ‘Vatka’, which as if lived in the Vyatka lands. The second elevates this word to the Proto-Indo-European language, endowing it with the meaning ‘bigger’, or — ‘wet’, ‘moist’.
