I always love seeing excellent pictures made by someone who took a non-traditional path to photography. Such is the case with the Munich-based Kristof Huf (@kristofhuf) who, for more than 25 years, has been a professional art restorer. His specialty is restoring architectural sculpture and stucco work in castles and churches throughout Europe.

Kristof has been shooting for fewer than 10 years and he has just made his first photo book, “How do you know someone loves you?” The book focuses on the Roma living in Slovakia and it’s just beautiful. And emotionally riveting. I asked Kristof how he came to work with the Roma community, and he told me this story: “It began in the harbor of Athens, Greece, during a difficult period in my life. I had just started photographing and was close to giving up,” he told me, “when I met a young Roma girl in Piraeus. I asked if I could make her portrait and, despite having just been crying, she immediately agreed. Her openness and kindness deeply moved me.” He went on to say that that portrait not only gave him the confidence to continue with photography but marked the beginning of his connection to Roma communities. If your eyes (and your heart) are open, you can find new beginnings everywhere.
Kristof spent seven years making the pictures in “How do you know someone loves you?” His dedication and patience show. The book is full of subtle moments that one can only come to over time. When I asked Kristof what sort of scene catches his eye, what makes him press the shutter, he said this: “Usually, it’s not a dramatic event. It’s a small gesture, a glance, a moment of vulnerability. I often photograph intuitively and only fully understand later why a particular moment felt important to me.”
I am incredibly pleased to say that Kristof’s beautiful pictures — as well as his book, of which only 100 copies were printed for this first edition — are now available on BluePhoto.co.
