NCU introduces a new member of the photo-documentary movement.
Alex Melia, in addition to shooting in his home country, has been living and photographing in the northern part of the Republic of Turkey for a long time. The main subject of his documentary research is simple everyday situations of working class life, at work and at home. Thanks to regular trips to the Anatolian Peninsula and the Armenian Highlands, the subject matter is so large and deep that it seems familiar to the viewer, even to those who have never visited the northern regions of Turkey.
The North of Turkey
Alex’s first series of photographs on NCU is called The North of Turkey. It is not a random choice for him, both the place of shooting and a meaningful search for visual and content material. The life in the northern regions of modern Turkey, reflected in the series of Alexey Melia’s works, seems, according to him, to be an allusion to the USSR era of the last decades before perestroika. Memories from his childhood are superimposed on the author’s present-day perception, mixed in fanciful images and parallel forms, suggestive and again forcing to rethink the historical path of development of his people.
