Paulo Nunes is a Portuguese photographer whose projects, thanks to his family ties to the Tras Us Montis, focus heavily on the ancestral traditions and rituals of this Portuguese region, as well as on social inequalities in general and the meaning of life itself. He was inspired not only by his childhood memories of the north-east of Transmontano, but also by literature. As an example, the writer Raúl Brandão inspired him to create a series of photographs about people working in the circus, fishermen, the Fatima sanctuary and the Roma community, based on the books A Morte do Palhaço, Os Pescadores, Húmus, Os Pobres and O Pobre de Pedir.
Transmontanos
Paulo’s first series on the NCU Transmontanos, focuses on the traditional way of life of Transmontanians, the forced adaptation to the realities of modernity and the uneasy transition to the new world.
